Despite the public outcry in 2019 and last year’s hiatus due to COVID-19, the Springdale, Ohio Department of Parks and Recreation appears to be planning a Goldfish Swim again on Aug. 8.
During this chaotic event, about 1,000 goldfish will be poured into a public pool, where children under 12 “must catch them with their bare hands, no nets, no buckets, or with the help of Mom and Dad,” hoping to take them home. … To be thrown into a pool filled with desperate children grabbing them will obviously be a terrible ordeal for these tiny animals, who are viewed by almost everyone as predators, and exposure to even trace amounts of chlorine can cause respiratory distress. In addition, since fish can carry bacteria such as Colibacillus, such events pose a danger to children. These animals need your help now!
Please ask the Springdale Parks and Recreation Authority and the Mayor to permanently cancel this violent event, and then forward this warning to everyone you know.
