The bond between sisters is probably the most important one in our life. Sisters are someone who grows, cries, and laughs with you. No matter how far apart you are, you will always be connected by heart, in which no one would understand you better but your sister.
In life, we go through celebrations as well as hardships. The good times are always better when someone is by our side to enjoy them, and the hard times feel a little lighter when someone is there to help you when you’re feeling down.
Sisters are always there to back you up no matter what, and that is how this little girl shows her love for her sister. Heaven Staples is a twelve-year-old girl who lives in Halliwell Parkway Northwest Atlanta. She is the eldest in the family, wherein she has four other siblings. Just last February on the 18th, Kevin dropped by to a Family Dollar Store. Nobody knows her plan, and everybody was shocked when a store employee caught Heaven shoplifting a pair of two-dollar shoes.
The store needed to call the police department, and Atlanta police officer Chef Milton went above and beyond the call. Upon arriving, due to his curiosity, he asked the girl why she took the shoes. She cried and bawled. She was feeling upset that she was caught stealing. Tears were shed everywhere as she told the officer that the shoes were for her five-year-old sister who needed them badly.
Her family couldn’t afford to pay for them, that’s why she just decided to steal them. After speaking with the young lady, Officer Milton was curious to see what the girls’ living conditions were like, so he took her home. That was when he saw her siblings ranging from newborn to 12. There were not enough beds for all the children, and the only furniture in the house was an old sofa. There was not much food in the home.
He went inside the house to have a small talk with her mother. He was told that she couldn’t work because she couldn’t afford to pay for daycare for smaller children while her husband works in and out of town but couldn’t make enough to provide for the family. Milton felt so bad for them to the extent that it pulled his heartstrings. Afterward, Milton went back to work and didn’t charge the young girl for shoplifting. He felt sympathetic to the family situation and felt that he needed to do something.
He then went back to their house and bought the family four pizzas and two large beverages. He paid it out of his own pocket. Heaven’s mother, Shamekh Staples, got choked up. Milton, who stands six-foot-seven, got a bit emotional. The whole family enjoyed the pizza not knowing that it’s just the beginning of something big.
Word of Milton’s generosity spread through the police department and the community. Then suddenly, things went their way. Donations to the Staples family started to trickle in. The Atlanta Police Department posted Officer Milton’s interaction with the little girl and her family on Facebook. The public also learned of Milton’s good deed, and a lot of people wanted to help.
The police department streamlined donations for the Staples using social media to inform people of drop-off locations. Then three months later, Shamekh Staples stood in her own driveway while local officers unloaded boxes and bags of clothes, diapers, food, and household supplies. Heaven hugged Milton, and one of her sisters greeted him, and he laughed. Among the contributions was a gift card from Kate Schlomit, a retired school librarian in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, who also enclosed a letter. “I have seen some students face difficult home situations,” Sloman wrote.
“I pray that their family gets a new start and a better life. May God bless and protect you, Officer Milton, and your police force as you face each challenging day.” According to Staples, “Milton has been a blessing to our family. When you have a lot of kids, you are constantly in need of things, and he’s helped to fill some of those needs.” It’s just who I am and just what I’ve been around my whole life,” Milton said, adding many of his fellow officers have done the same.
No one might have known of Milton’s kindness had it not been for another officer who was on duty with him. In fact, Milton worried he’d gotten into trouble when his supervisor called to ask about the case. But then another officer came forward to commend him. “The way Officer Milton handled this incident showed that not only is he a hero to enforce the law but also to go the extra mile and be a bigger part of the community that he is serving,” instead. Milton was named Zone One’s officer of the month the same month he graduated from the police academy.
His actions also inspired Heaven to volunteer and donate items to other needy families. Her mom said, “For a man who didn’t always want to go into law enforcement, Milton said the decision to become an officer is among the best of his life. His goal is to become a police chief one day. “I’m here to help protect and serve,” he said, “and that is what I’m going to continue to do.” As of today, the police department is collecting donations for the family.
What a kind man. Sometimes doing your job requires a different approach. The outcome for this family and the little girl would be so much different if he’d taken her into custody. Thankfully, he got them the help that they so desperately needed. Officer Milton did what he thought was the right thing to do, regardless of the laws and policies that may have applied to the case, and it was his best decision ever.
