Lions have been carefully studied and are therefore well known to scientists. They have been studied both in the wild and in captivity with regard to behavior, biology and ecological role. Lions are incredibly unique and complex creatures that are considered the cornerstone. In architecture, the “cornerstone” at the top of an arch is what prevents the arch from collapsing. In ecology, a key species is a species that is essential for the survival of their ecosystem. If the key species becomes extinct, the balance of their natural environment will be disrupted. Lions are not only large animals, but also play an important ecological role.

Which of the subspecies is the largest living one?

The largest lion ever recorded in the wild is reported to have weighed 690 pounds and was shot in South Africa in 1936.

There are two subspecies of lions, that is, two subspecies that have not disappeared. One subspecies is called Panthera leo leowhich includes Asiatic lions in India and lions in western and northern Central Africa. Second Panthera leo melanochaita, which includes lions found in southern and eastern Africa. The barbarian lion that lived in North Africa from Morocco to Egypt was part of P. leo leo subspecies, but became extinct in the 1960s. Cape lion belonged to P. leo melanochaita subspecies, but became extinct in the wild in the mid-19s.^th century. Apart from formal taxonomy, lions are often categorized as “Asiatic lion” and “African lion”.

Asiatic lion populations are found only in the Gir National Park in and around India. From the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, Asiatic lions are 6.5 feet long. The largest wild Asiatic lion ever recorded was caught in 1620 and weighed 675 pounds. However, usually wild Asiatic lions have a maximum weight of 418 pounds.

A very large wild lion in Africa was observed in Kenya near Mount Kenya. This male African lion was 11 feet long and weighed an incredible 600 pounds! However, as we noted above, there have been reports of a lion that weighed 690 pounds, and Guinness Book of Records billed as the largest lion in history. Typically, wild lions have a maximum weight of 496 pounds in southern Africa and 451 pounds in eastern Africa.

There are many types of lions that have roamed the earth for hundreds of thousands of years. The American cave lion inhabited North America between 340,000 and 11,000 years ago. Fossils of this species have been excavated from Alaska to Mexico, suggesting that it had a large geographic range. Based on the fossils, scientists predict that the American cave lion was about 25% larger than modern lions, making it one of the largest known cats to ever exist. The estimated maximum length of the American lion from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail is an impressive 8 feet 2 inches. A 2008 study estimated that this lion weighed up to 930 pounds; however, a 2012 study claims that men could weigh up to 1,153 pounds!

The Eurasian cave lion was also larger than modern lions. He lived between 60,000 and 13,000 years ago throughout Europe and Asia. The Eurasian cave lion was smaller than the American cave lion, but was still about 12% larger than modern lions. Based on the fossil record, Eurasia’s largest cave lion has been estimated to be 6 feet 11 inches long excluding the tail. The largest specimen ever found weighed about 750 pounds!

Ligers are the offspring of a male lion and a female tigress. Ligers are the largest felines in existence, but technically they are not a separate species. Male ligers are sterile, that is, unable to reproduce. Although female ligers are capable of reproduction, since male and female ligers cannot produce viable offspring together, they are not recognized as a species. Instead, their “kind” is denoted as Panther lion ♂ X Panthera tigris ♀ (male lion X female tiger).

Ligers are considered the largest living cat on Earth and are much larger than their lion and tiger parents. The largest liger was named Hercules and was bred in captivity in 2002. Hercules had an exceptional weight of 922 pounds!

If we consider only lions of the currently existing subspecies and include captive lions, then the largest lion ever recorded was a male living at Dublin Zoo, Ireland, in 1959. This lion weighed 827 pounds, making it the largest lion in the world!

What ecological role do lions play?

Lions are classified as a cornerstone. This means that they have a disproportionate impact on their natural environment and are critical to maintaining the structure of their ecological community. As top predators, they must exist to control populations of other animals. The lion’s diet consists mainly of wildebeest, zebra and African buffalo. These animals have only a few other predators, and their diet mainly consists of savanna grasses. Hypothetically, if the lions die out, populations of wildebeests, zebras and African buffaloes will skyrocket. Large grazing populations can overwhelm their food resources and cause scarcity of savanna grasses. This will have an incredible impact on all types of plants and animals in the ecosystem. By analogy, lions as a cornerstone are like starting dominoes in a long chain – if knocked down, many other pieces will fall behind them.

Great efforts are currently being made to preserve and restore lion populations. Lions currently have a Vulnerable Conservation Status, which means they could be threatened with extinction if no action is taken. Lions were threatened primarily by habitat destruction and trophy hunting. Lion hunting is currently permitted, including captive hunting for sporting purposes. Major efforts to restore lion populations include captive breeding and close monitoring of wild populations.
