Seattle Earlier today, Nurse Jackie and The Sopranos star Edie Falco called in nearly 18,000 faculty and staff at the University of Washington to deliver an urgent message on behalf of PETA: 400 monkeys are now suffering and in grave danger in Washington. Research Center (WaNPRC), a secret laboratory operating right under their noses on the UW campus.
“The video that was filmed by the experimenters from the inside … shows these monkeys who never see sunlight, and they circle, they walk in despair and despair,” Falco’s voicemail begins. “As a member of the UW community, you really need to know what’s going on. This primate center has been researched. Federal officials cite it as a violation of the Animal Welfare Act. “
She goes on to explain that the monkeys died there from hunger, dehydration, strangulation and veterinary errors, while those who survived are subjected to toe bending experiments. “[E]The experimenters carved out the skulls of these monkeys. They implant a metal device directly into the bone, ”she says.
Monkeys in WaNPRC have died from bleeding to death, from injury from other stressed monkeys and from suffocation from their own vomit – and after 60 years, the center has not been able to produce a single commercial vaccine or cure for deadly human diseases. PETA and Falco urge UW President Ana Marie Kous to follow Harvard’s lead and shut down the Primate Center.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
