    Written by Desmond Bellamy

Saturday 28 August is World Species Day. What does this mean?

Psychologist Richard Ryder coined the term “specisism” in 1971, referring to a bias in favor of the interests of humans and against other species. He called the assumption that humans belong to an entirely different moral category from other species as “pure superstition” and concluded that “it may be that enlightened minds may one day be as strong about” arrogance “as they are now. they hate “racism”. The illogicality of both forms of prejudice is the same. ” Peter Singer made this concept at the heart of his foundational work on Animal Liberation.

Ending arrogance does not mean reducing the moral value of people, but rather restoring the dignity and respect that we have deprived of animals, whose lives have become a living hell in laboratories, industrial farms, treadmills and slaughterhouses. Albert Schweitzer received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of Reverence for Life, where he wrote: “A person is ethical only when … he devotes himself to helping the whole life that needs help.”

Body Art 'Animals' Lead Rally Against Injustice

The painted PETA protesters called on viewers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to reject arrogance and all forms of injustice, including human, white, heterosexual and male superiority.

As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice around the world”; Until we eradicate arrogance along with all other toxic and unjust “isms”, we will not be able to call ourselves an ethical society.
