Wilmington, North Carolina – Right on the street from the infamous Tregembo Animal Park, a new PETA billboard has just been installed to dissuade drivers from stopping at the roadside zoo, as recently cited by the USDA for its rusty enclosures and inability to seek veterinary care for sick animals. As drivers continue down the road this Saturday, they will spot local PETA supporters waving a giant banner that reads “Roadside Zoos Support Animal Cruelty.”

When: Saturday, 28 August, 12 noon

Where: 5811 Carolina Beach Rd., Wilmington

“Every time federal inspectors leave, Tregembo goes back to not caring for the animals,” says Debbie Metzler, deputy director of the PETA Captive Law Enforcement Foundation. “A PETA billboard asks drivers not to brake, but to step on the gas when they spot this hellish place.”

Tregembo’s previous references to federal animal welfare violations include refusing to provide a bear named Ben, who had serious eye, nose, and mouth injuries, with proper veterinary care. Following a lawsuit filed against the institution by North Carolina animal rights activists, PETA rescued Ben and another bear named Gods, who were constantly pacing the cramped concrete-floored cell, and arranged for them to be transported to a Wildlife Refuge in Colorado.

The billboard is located at 5941 Carolina Beach Rd., Wilmington.

PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to be used for entertainment” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
