Chatfield, Minnesota. – PETA covert investigation video at the Moulton Chinchilla Ranch (MCR) exposed horrific animal suffering, with chinchillas having open wounds, exposed bones, and other painful injuries. PETA is now deploying a mobile billboard in Chatfield, Rochester and Preston urging mill owner and operator Dan Moulton and his wife, Sue, to close the facility and hand over long-forgotten chinchillas to organizations that have the equipment to support them. with humane care. PETA aired a radio show last week on Minnesota 97.5 FM radio channeling reports to locals of the rampant animal neglect found at MCR.
A PETA witness who has worked for MCR, which has supplied animals to laboratories and the pet trade for decades, has gathered evidence showing that nearly 1,000 chinchillas were constantly kept in cramped, fully open wire cages, and prevented even from hiding, burrowing or busy sports in any case, which are vital natural behaviors for the species. In addition, the animals were chronically deprived of urgently needed veterinary care for abscesses and pus-filled eyes, as well as other medical conditions. One chinchilla died after weeks of a fierce bloody open wound, and another died after being attacked and injured by the Moultons’ dog, leaving her to suffer for the night without any help.
“This breeder will not provide even basic chinchillas, and his wife apparently turned a blind eye to suffering in her own backyard,” says Daphne Nachminovich, PETA’s senior vice president of cruelty investigations. “PETA is encouraging this couple to finally allow these vulnerable animals to receive the care they need.”
After hearing from PETA, Atlas Pet Supply ditched MCR as a supplier – its CEO called the conditions “completely unacceptable,” and the Rochester Community and Technical College Veterinary Technicians program ended its study visits to the mill.
There are photos from the investigation available here… PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority.
