Norfolk, Virginia. – Below, please find a statement from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in response to a video in which NRA Executive Vice President Wayne Lapierre repeatedly shot and failed to kill an African bush elephant (an endangered species) when a dying animal rumbled in distress or to warn others – until someone finally takes the decisive shot. Lapierre’s wife stands nearby, laughing at the groaning elephant.
“Behind the NRA’s macho stance are frightened little men who pay tens of thousands of dollars to have someone else track down the elephants so that they can clumsily shoot them at close range. This elephant died a terrible death, so Wayne Lapierre managed to chop off its front legs and send it to the United States under someone else’s name to make stools for his home. PETA is urging every member of Congress to watch this video, condemn the killing of animals for body parts by trophy lovers, and have the courage to give up NRA money. ”
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
