Louisville, Kentucky. – See the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Katy Guillermo regarding the report that the winner of the Kentucky Derby Medina Alcohol, trained by Bob Buffert, tested positive for the illicit drug betamethasone during the race:
The time is long past when regulators stopped protecting Bob Buffert with minimal fines and finally kicked him out of the race. Thirty confirmed drug law violations in his career, five of which in the last year alone, point to a pattern of fraud that hasn’t been tolerated over the years. He will no doubt come up with another implausible excuse, but this time, regulators need to strengthen the spine, protect horses from systematic abuse, and ban him from racing forever.
