Angels – Tomorrow, PETA supporters will gather in a park on Lake Balboa as part of a new garbage-catching initiative inspired by a father-son duo who decided to take garbage – from tires to cans – in the Detroit River in Michigan. Community trash collection events that will take place across the country, including in Denver and New York, will be provided with eco-friendly gloves, compostable trash bags and vegan snacks such as Swedish fish candy.
When: Saturday, April 3, 10.00
Where: Lake Balboa Park, 6300 Balboa Blvd., Van Nuys
“PETA’s Garbage Fishing Initiative is a fun way to enjoy nature, reduce pollution and protect marine life in all its fascinating forms,” says PETA Campaign Director Daniel Katz. “No one will encourage children to catch dogs or cats by mouth, and fish should be treated with the same respect.”
Alastair Sevilla, runner-up as the cutest vegan kids from PETA Kids 2018, will join the socially distanced event with his mother. From the age of 3, the sixth grader performed for everything animals, whether they have fins or fur.
PETA notes that traditional fishing is a cruel practice, with gentle animals being hooked through their sensitive mouths, watching them slowly choke and sometimes even gut them while they are still alive. Although they are now known to feel pain as intensely as mammals, more fish are killed each year than all other animals combined. Fishing also harms ‘non-target’ species: every year anglers and the fishing industry leave a trail of victims, including birds, turtles and other animals, who are debilitatingly injured when they swallow fish hooks or become entangled in line.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “the animals are not ours to eat” – opposes arrogance, a worldview focused on human superiority. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
