Tokyo Whistleblower footage exposed rampant abuse and gruesome neglect at a chicken farm owned by ISE Foods, Japan’s largest egg producer, which is certified to sell eggs at the Tokyo Olympics, prompting PETA to urge the Tokyo Organizing Committee to sell only vegan egg substitutes. at the 2020 Games.
New footage from PETA Asia shows dead chickens left to rot with survivors, as well as live birds covered in open sores. Some chickens died slowly, trapped under the feeder, while others experienced loss of reproductive tissue protruding from their bodies – a condition caused by inadequate diet or stress when they had to lay many more eggs than would have been natural. In every dark cage on the farm, there are a few birds that you can stand, sit and lie on only on the bare wire floor. Each bird has less space than a letter-sized sheet of paper, and many lack feathers, which experts say is the result of stress-induced self-harm or space struggles.
“PETA’s disclosures are further proof that the cruelty always when animals are reared in the factory, ”says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “The Olympics shouldn’t be offering the world’s top athletes or anyone else eggs from dirty vendors when vegan protein options are available that are clean, healthy, and safe for animals.”
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to eat or otherwise abuse” – opposes specisism, which is a worldview focused on human superiority. Broadcast quality videos are available here.
