Austin, TX – In anticipation of the forecast of the Arctic explosion in the Austin area, PETA shares tips for animal safety… They are particularly vulnerable in cold weather and winter storms, and there were at least 37 cold weather-related companion animal deaths in 2019 (these are the only reported, most not). Here are just a few of the dogs that PETA field researchers found suffering from the cold this winter.

The following steps can go a long way in helping animals survive this arctic blast and other cold weather:

Companion animals should always live indoors. “Backyard dogs“And” street cats “- like those shown on Breaking the chain, a new documentary directed by Oscar winner Angelica Houston, often goes without adequate food, water, shelter and veterinary care. They are no better equipped to cope with cold temperatures or extreme weather conditions, they suffer terribly from frostbite and can die from exposure.

The coat will provide comfort for dogs in cold weather, a reliable harness will prevent them from loosening on a walk, and booties will protect their sensitive paw pads from the frozen ground. In cold weather, walks should be short, especially for short-haired dogs.

During extreme winter weather, provide emergency water supplies to birds and other wildlife by filling a heavy, non-metallic water container (tongues can freeze to metal) and breaking the surface ice at least twice a day.

Good Samaritans who see companion animals kept in chains or in pens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or without adequate shelter from the weather. the exact location of the animals should be noted and reported immediately to local law enforcement. Anyone who leaves animals on the street to get hurt in harsh weather can be prosecuted.
